What is a WhatsApp Link Generator?
A WhatsApp link generator creates clickable links that open WhatsApp with a specific phone number and optional predefined message. When users click the link, WhatsApp opens automatically with your number and message pre-filled, eliminating the need for users to manually add your number to their contacts or type messages.
Key Features
- Easy Link Generation: Simply enter your phone number and optional message to generate a link instantly
- Pre-filled Messages: Include predefined messages that appear automatically when users click the link
- No Contact Required: Users don't need to save your number to their contacts
- One-Click Copy: Copy generated links to clipboard with a single click
- Test Links: Test your generated links before sharing
- Mobile & Desktop: Works on both mobile devices and desktop computers
- Marketing Ready: Perfect for social media, websites, email campaigns, and printed materials
- Number Validation: every number is checked against the same international numbering data dialers use, so a wrong length or country code is flagged before you share the link
- QR Code: a scannable code for the same link, downloadable as a PNG for print
- Website Button: copy a ready-made inline, floating or text button as self-contained HTML
- Bulk Mode: paste a list and get a validated link for every number, with a CSV export
- Both Link Formats: generate wa.me or the older api.whatsapp.com form

- Correct: 1234567890 (for US number +1 234 567 890)
- Correct: 447911123456 (for UK number +44 7911 123456)
- Incorrect: +1234567890 (don't include +)

- Include Context: Mention where the user found the link (e.g., "Hi, I saw your ad on Facebook")
- Call to Action: Encourage users to respond or ask questions
- Personalization: Consider using placeholders if you plan to customize links
Best Practices
- Test Before Sharing: Always test your generated links before sharing publicly
- Use HTTPS: Ensure your website uses HTTPS for secure link sharing
- Mobile Optimization: Test links on mobile devices where WhatsApp is most commonly used
- Track Performance: Monitor click rates and engagement from your WhatsApp links
- Update Regularly: Update messages based on campaigns or seasonal promotions
- Privacy Consideration: Be transparent about how you'll use contact information
Privacy & Security
Your WhatsApp link generation is secure and private:
- No Data Storage: Phone numbers and messages are processed locally in your browser
- No Server Logging: We don't store or log any personal information
- Direct Links: Generated links go directly to WhatsApp, not through our servers
- User Control: Users can edit or delete messages before sending
Technical Details
- WhatsApp API: Uses official WhatsApp URL format (wa.me)
- URL Encoding: Messages are automatically URL-encoded for safe transmission
- Cross-Platform: Works on iOS, Android, and WhatsApp Web
- Browser Support: Compatible with all modern browsers
The wa.me link format, explained
Every WhatsApp click-to-chat link is built on the same official URL, which is why people also search for a “wa.me link generator”, a “wa link generator” or simply a “wa generator”. The shape is always:
https://wa.me/<countrycode><number>?text=<pre-filled message>
- The number is the full international number as digits only: country code first, with no plus sign, no leading zero and no spaces or dashes. A UK mobile written as +44 7911 123456 becomes
447911123456. - ?text= is optional. Whatever follows it opens already typed into the chat box, so the person only has to press send. Spaces and punctuation are URL-encoded for you.
- Leave ?text= off and you get a plain chat opener with nothing pre-filled.
Because it is just a URL, it works anywhere a link works: a website button, an email signature, a social bio, a PDF or a printed code.
Using the right number format
The most common reason a WhatsApp link fails is the number format. These links need E.164 digits, and a contact list that mixes country codes, local leading zeros, brackets and spaces will break some entries. If you are working from an exported list, run it through the phone number validator first: it normalises every number to exactly that shape and flags anything invalid, so nothing fails silently later.
Turn your WhatsApp link into a QR code
For a shop window, a menu, a business card or a stand at an event, a scannable code often beats a typed link. The generator above builds the QR code for you and downloads it as a PNG, so there is nothing to copy across. If you want to change the size, the colours or the error-correction level, use the QR code generator for the full set of options. Either way, test the code on a real phone before you print it: a code that scans on a bright laptop screen can still fail on a laminated menu.
When a WhatsApp link does not work
- A plus sign or leading zero crept in. Remove both; the link wants digits only.
- The country code is missing, so WhatsApp cannot tell which country the number belongs to and may guess wrong.
- An email client or CMS rewrote the URL. Paste the plain link into a browser and check it before sharing.
- The number has no WhatsApp account, or its privacy settings block messages from unknown senders. The chat still opens, but the message may not be delivered.
WhatsApp Business and the api.whatsapp.com form
WhatsApp also accepts an older equivalent, https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=<number>&text=<message>, which does the same job. wa.me is the shorter, current form and is what this generator produces. Click-to-chat links work with a WhatsApp Business profile too, and they are the standard way to give customers a direct line from a website or an advert without asking them to save your number first.
Add a WhatsApp button to your website
Most people who come to a link generator are not going to paste a raw URL anywhere: they want a button. The generator above also produces a ready-to-paste HTML snippet in three shapes, an inline button, a floating button that stays pinned to a corner of the page, and a plain text link, with your own label on it. The snippet is self-contained, no CSS file, no script and no framework, so it can be dropped into a page builder, a CMS, a template or a static site as-is. Only the label is editable; everything else is fixed so the button renders the same wherever it lands.
Generate links in bulk
If you are working from a list, a spreadsheet or a CRM export, doing that one number at a time is the wrong shape. Switch to Bulk links in the tool above, paste the numbers one per line, and every one is normalised, checked and turned into a link, with the invalid entries flagged rather than silently skipped. You can copy the whole set or download it as a CSV. The same point about formats applies at scale: a column that mixes +971…, 00971… and 050… still resolves correctly, provided a default country is set for the local ones.
What you cannot pre-fill
A link can only carry text. Images, PDFs, voice notes, locations, contact cards and product catalogues cannot be attached through a ?text= parameter, and no generator can put them there, whatever the marketing copy implies. Keep the message short and practical, add the context that matters (“I saw your advert on…”), and let the conversation do the rest. A very long pre-filled message also makes the URL unwieldy in an email client or a printed code, so write a first line, not a paragraph.
Does the other person need WhatsApp?
The link always opens a chat, but a message can only be received by a number that has a WhatsApp account. If the number is not on WhatsApp, or its privacy settings block messages from people outside its contacts, the chat may open and the message may never arrive. That cuts both ways: a click-to-chat link never proves anyone is reachable, it only removes the step of saving your number first. Business profiles receive these messages normally, which is what makes the format the standard for website and advert contact.
Do UTM parameters belong on a wa.me link?
Some link generators offer UTM tracking parameters, so it is worth being clear about what they do. WhatsApp ignores query parameters it does not recognise, so adding utm_source to a wa.me URL changes nothing inside WhatsApp. What it can do is help your own web analytics attribute the click, because the parameters sit on the URL in the moment before the browser hands it to WhatsApp. If click attribution is what you want, the more reliable place to measure is the click on the page that hosts the button. This tool leaves UTM out rather than adding fields that do not do what they appear to.
Test before you ship
The most common failure is a link that looks perfect and opens the wrong chat, or nothing at all, and the only reliable test is on a real phone. Open the link once from the device and network your audience actually uses, with WhatsApp installed, and watch where it lands. A desktop test proves very little: it will happily offer WhatsApp Web even when the number itself is wrong. Check the pre-filled message too, since a stray space or a line break is preserved inside the chat box exactly as it was typed.
